I’m originally from East Tennessee and
attended University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
At college, I had a hard time choosing a
major. Besides the fact that I was interested in several subjects, I was
also a member of the Lady Vols Volleyball team, which required a
considerable time commitment. I finally chose Psychology because the
classes fit into my practice schedule, and in psychology, you get to
write lengthy essays about yourself. I found that quite satisfying. I
still do.
I went on to earn my Master’s degree in
Sports Psychology from University of Virginia. More writing, lots more
writing!
Since college prepared me so well for the
real world, I found myself grabbing at the nearest thing to a career
that didn’t involve hair nets and grease. I spent several years in the
health club industry motivating people to exercise and to lose weight. I
also worked as a customer service representative, and as a salesperson.
Throughout those years, writing was my hobby. I took writing classes,
wrote for local publications, and participated in writing groups.
My work experience has been very
beneficial in preparing me for the publishing industry. My years as a
fitness instructor gave me great insight into people and taught me
effective interviewing skills. As a customer service representative, I
learned that the customer is always right. Now, editors are my customers
and I can be flexible with their requests. As a salesperson, I learned
self-motivation and how to handle rejection, which are undeniably vital
qualities for a freelance writer.
It’s taken me a while to get to this
point, but the time has been well spent. Although I’m still learning,
and will always be learning, the craft of writing, I’m now a freelance
writer.
I live in an historic neighborhood in
Macon, Georgia with my husband, Dan, two daughters, Abby and Josie, and
our dog, Sadie.
